IF I WAS A HERO.....

If I was a hero, I would have the ability to heal a person miracously. I say this becuase i am a very spiritual person. I went threw alot in the past and I've been hurt so many times before. I wish there was someone who could have been there to heal me at that present moment. Physically, Mentally, and Emotionally. I want to be able to be a great help to people in need, who are suffering and who needs to be helped.

Cigarrette Girl Reflection

Before i went to see cigarrette girl, my first thoughts were that it was going to be boring. A black and white film done by some idiot. Something i would probably fall asleep on. I mean after all, the preview shown in class was boring. Compared to that preview and the movie i saw at the Brooks Musuem, it was pretty good. Some of the parts of the movie was funny and yet it still contained alot of seriousness and action. It also had a mixture of suspense to it. The reason i say suspense is because alot of time in the movie, cigarrette girl had alot of illusions about the cowboy that always showed up after she had killed someone or whenever she had the urge to kill someone. The cowboy appeared and always tries to hurt her and then he would disappear. I can conclude that she must have been in an abusive relationship with this guy, her ex-lover. Maybe he could have been just an thought, and idea. I couldnt figure out who he was at first. I guess im still wondering. If i had the opportunity to, i would ask Mike McCarthy. I really did want things to turn out differently then they did at the end. Throughout the movie cigarrette girl wanted to fufill her grandmothers will and stay quit. It was very hard for her and the only thing that kept her from smoking, was killing people. I think she was finally able to stay quit and move on with her life after she left the smoking section. Overall this movie was interesting.

Assignment for Thursday 9/24

(Group 1) I think that the title, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, is in question form because noOne really knows where Connie and Arnorld Friend went, and I think it kind of left everyone guessing where they went. The Word "YOU" in the title is refering to Connie. It is a possibility that the story is dedicated to Bob Dylan because of his song "Where Are You Going Baby Blue". To other people it may seem like the main character is Connie, but I really think that the main character is Arnold friend.

(Group 2) The house seemed kind of empty so it kind of reminds me of Connies identity. Arnold Friend is a guy who is obviously older. NoOne really knows exactly who he is. He should have been named Arnold Friend, the guy is crazy. His car is very clean and unique. Its different from the other cars and the designs on the car are very artistic. He dressed decent and his language seemed very clear. I think that once Arnold Friend begin telling Connie things about her she starts to question who Arnold really is. She becomes confused and frightened because she see's Arnold as a crazy man. I guess at the time Connie's personality changed because of of strange feeling she was having. I think you can definietoy seperate Connies personality and her idenity in the story. Her identity was that she is this sad girl who wants to grow up and be popular and have everything and when she goes out away from the house she shows her personality which is outgoing and fun.
(Group 3) On Arnold Friends car in the story he has the numbers 33 19 and 17. The way he was approaching Connie and the way he was talking i thought that maybe it was the ages of the women he had done that to. On the class blog it tells us that the numbers are a chapter in the bible. I think that the aurthor didnt dispalay Connies family alot because it would have kind of changed the story and made it seem like at the time that she loved her family and it would of took the attention off connie. In the story i think Arnold takes connie to an open field and have sex with her, well thats what it looked like in the story.
(Group 4)  I think the tone was always low and calm at most tmes. This story could have took place anywhere. But the aurthor set in a small town.

John Updikes Notes

  • John Updike got story from experiencing seeing a girl at the supermarked wearing a bathing suit along time ago but never got a chance to write about it.
  • Queenie was the one who cuaght Sammy's attention
  • Sammy is poor, Queenie is Rich
  • Nobody will like Sammy's decision
  • Lengel was john Updikes mothers boss a long time ago
  • Sammy looks for girls and cant find them after quitting his job
  • Sees Sammy as a male trying to make his way through his environment.

Comparing Poems to A&P

The two poems, "Rights of Passage", and "The One Girl at the boys Party", were similiar to the story "A&P" in a few ways. Both poems were very discriptive meaning it put alot of emphasis on the main characters, describing how the looked, how they acted ect. The two poems start out with the characters entering the room just like A&P, so i would say the introduction is somewhat similar. In the story A&P Sammy and Queenie were different. According to John Updike, Sammy was poor and Queenie was rich. In Rights of Passage, the boys are different in age, and think their better than the other. In "The One Girl at the Boys Party", they were different because she was a girl and they were boys. So i would also say in both there is a Contrast in characters.

MY PERCEPTIONS OF A&P FROM JOHN UPDIKE

After watching the video clip featuring John Updike in class. I noticed alot of things that i imagined A&P to be where very different then John Updike imagined it. He was saying in the interview that Sammy was poor and Queenie was rich, but when i read the story i thought that they both were middle class because the story doesnt describe Queenie or the other girls as rich. When Updike read the story in the interview you could tell it was very short and quick but in the story there was so much more detail and description on how things went and how things were said.

WHAT IS A HERO TO ME?

WHAT IS A HERO TO ME?
Most people hears the word hero, and the first thing that comes to mind is saving someone's life. Whether its saving someone from death, embarrassment, or even saving someone of getting their feelings hurt; The word hero could mean so many different things.
To me a hero is someone you can always depend on to be there for you when you need them to be. No matter what time it is, or Where you are, or how small the situation is; they will be there. They will postpone all their plans just to be there for you.
A hero to me also means someone who listens to you and gives you good feed back. They listen to all our problems without cutting you off, without withholding information, and most certaintly without lying to you. They give you great advice, and tells you what you need to hear not what you want to hear.
When someone takes up for you, stands up for your principles, stands by your side, and tells the other person off, thats a hero to me. They are courageous and shows no cowardly action. A hero to me means putting someone else before yourself. Putting your own beliefs on the line to save that person some embarrassment.
A hero is a friend, someone who sticks with you through thick and thin. Someone that cares about you. Someone who loves you, and worries about how you are doing throughout the day. They are considerate of your feelings. They want to know your concerns and howd to help you. They are involved in your life, they make a big difference. Their your role model and can determine what kind of hero you will someday be to someone else. That is my kind of hero.
In the story A&P, the character Sammy potrays himself as a hero by quiting his job for the sake of the girls in the store to show his courageous efforts to be noticed. Sammy in some terms is an example of what a hero is to me. I wouldnt have quit my job over something so minor but love for someone to stand up for me in a situation like that.
