SONNY’S BLUES
1. FROM WHOSE POINT VIEW IS “SONNY’S BLUES” TOLD? HOW DO THE NARRATORS’S VALUES AND EXPERIENCES AFFECT HIS POINT OF VIEW OF THE STORY?
The story is told by Sonny’s older Brother his name isn’t mentioned because he is the narrator. By the brother being kin to Sonny you can really tell the connection and the relationship between him and the other characters.
2. WHAT IS ATHE OLDEST BROTHERS PROFESSION? DOES IT SUGGEST ANYTHING ABOUT HIS PERSONALITY?
The oldest brother’s occupation is a teacher. His profession shows how much he desires to work with other kids. It shows that he cares.
3. HOW WOULD THIS STORY CHANGE IF IT WERE TOLD BY SONNY?
If the story would have been told in Sonny’s point of view it would bring out the truth in Sonny. How he feels about everything. About the music and about his drug addiction.
4. WHAT EVENT PROMPTS THE NARRATOR TO WRITE HIS BROTHER?
When the oldest brothers daughter dies, he decides to write Sonny
5. WHAT DOES THE NARRATOR’S MOTHER ASK HIM TO DO FOR SOMMY? DOES THE OLDEST BROTHER KEEP HIS PROMISE?
The mother asked him to look after Sonny. But he fails to so so because Sonny got on drugs. Toward the end I think he Finally keeps his promise
6. THE MAJOR CHARACTERS IN THE STORY ARE CALLED MAMA, DADDY, AND SONNY, THE OLDEST BROTHER IS NEVER MENTIONED. HOW DO THESE NAMES AFFECT OUR SENSE OF THE STORY?
Those names remind me of the closeness a real family has.
7. REREAD THE LAST FOUR PARAGRAPHS AND EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STATEMENT “NOW THESE ARE SONNY’S BLUES,” HOW HAS SONNY MADE THE SONG HIS OWN?
Sonny makes this song his own because everyone has their own blues about life and what they went through but this is about Sonny life and what he went through.
